Many states require this policy in addition to a uninsured
motorist policy (UM). Generally this policy covers the
driver and passengers if they are in an accident that is the
fault of a driver who is underinsured. Often this will pay
medical expenses up to the limits of the liability
auto insurance carried by the owner.
This auto insurance may be required in some states and each
state determines exactly what is covered with this kind of
policy.
