Compare Health Insurance

With such a wide variety of insurance carriers to choose from and several plans within those carriers, it can sometimes be overwhelming to find the best health insurance plan for you and your family. Health insurance comparisons are the best way to evaluate their differences and select a policy that will fit with your lifestyle. There are many options to choose from, so educate yourself a little on what those options are and how they will work with your plan.

Difference Between HMOs and PPOs

Health Maintenance Organizations(HMOs)are health care coverage carriers that typically offer their services through a pre-approved network of providers. They have contracts with doctors and different facilities in order to keep costs down and pass the savings on to you. HMOs generally have lower premiums and deductibles, however you are, in most cases, required to visit doctors and facilities within the provider network. On occasion doctors may be allowed to refer you to out-of-network providers, but the coverage would be lower than with a network approved physician.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) are also health care coverage carriers. However, a PPO is not as restrictive as an HMO when it comes to the doctors you use. A PPO also has a network of providers that are contracted at lower rates, but you are entitled to visit any doctor of your choosing without the need of a referral from an in-network provider. If you have had a family doctor for a long period of time and prefer to stay with that doctor, a PPO is probably in your best interest - unless, of course, your physician is a member of an HMO network. A PPO allows you to choose any doctor you would like to use. In return, the premiums are normally slightly higher and referrals are often necessary for any non-emergency surgeries or treatments.

Compare health insurance benefits of both HMOs and PPOs to find out what will be the best health insurance option for you. Obtaining a health insurance comparison will provide you with invaluable insight that will allow you to make an educated decision.

Health Savings Account

The popularity of Health Savings Accounts is on the rise. This program offers the opportunity to set aside money from each paycheck to go into a special medical account, tax-free, and to be used strictly for medical purposes. Many people end up saving money with Health Savings Accounts because they are able to choose higher deductibles and in return pay lower premiums. This difference is more often a gain on the part of the policy holder, barring any major unforeseen accidents or illnesses.

A Health Savings Account requires the funds to be used only for medical purposes in order to receive the tax-free benefit. If at any time money is used for a non-medical expense, the taxes and penalties are very similar to an early retrieval of an IRA. Utilizing this type of program is a big decision as it works for those who are overall healthy and can be a detriment to those who choose to take advantage of it and end up incurring medical debt because their risk was too high and they fell into an unfortunate situation. Access your health and the health of your family to see if this would be the right option for you.

Please do not confuse a Health Saving Account with a Health Care Spending Account, more commonly referred to as a Flexible Spending Account. The latter is a program that is set up in a similar fashion, but the benefits are often only available on a calendar year and any money not used for medical purposes is forfeit. Health Spending Accounts are also tax-free and the monies deducted for this account are taken out before the payroll tax is assessed. Most states will have information that is specific to your area on their government sites.
